The 82 page volume was compiled by George West Blake for the years 1851-1854. It lists all the omnibus lines then operating in the city, giving routes, names of owners, operators, as well as builders and painters of vehicles.

The first regular local transit in the city of Philadelphia was offered by James Boxall, who began operating a local stage coach on Chestnut Street in 1831. Larger omnibuses began running on Second Street from Kensington to the Navy Yard in 1833. By 1857 there were 322 licensed omnibuses operating on the streets of Philadelphia.
